I was sitting in this little courtyard in Hell's Kitchen the other day and I looked up and saw a blond woman and her blond kids and knew instantly that they were Californian. (They were, I asked.) And it struck me, as it has a few times since moving to NY, first, how utterly unique this look is to California, and second, how much I sometimes miss the expansive, earthy life that gives rise to it.
